  • Māori Trustee and Chief Executive of Te Tumu Paeroa

Dr Charlotte Severne (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāi Tūhoe) is the Māori Trustee. She heads up Te Tumu Paeroa, managing over 90,000 hectares of Māori land on behalf of nearly 100,000 owners by providing professional trustee, property management, and land development services to over 1,800 Māori land trusts.

Charlotte holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Auckland. In 2016 she was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, this recognises her role as an advocate and mentor for Māori Development and Science.

Charlotte also has a wealth of experience in working with Māori business as a science advisor and in governance roles in energy, fisheries and farming entities. Prior to becoming the Māori Trustee, her Governance Leadership roles were primary and energy sector based.

Greg Shaw

  • General Counsel and Deputy Māori Trustee

Greg Shaw is the General Counsel and Deputy Māori Trustee for Te Tumu Paeroa. 

Greg has been a practising lawyer for 28 years, and legal adviser to three Māori Trustee over the last 16 years.

Greg was appointed Deputy Māori Trustee in November 2018 and a member of Te Tumu Paeroa’s Investment Committee in July 2019.

As General Counsel Greg is responsible for managing the legal issues arising in connection with Te Tumu Paeroa's administration of approximately one third of all Māori land trusts. He has appeared as lead counsel in a number of significant cases before the Māori Land Court and Māori Appellate Court, and before the general Courts of Aotearoa New Zealand on Māori land law issues.

As Deputy Māori Trustee Greg leads Te Tumu Paeroa in the Māori Trustee’s absence and manages a number of Te Tumu Paeroa’s key stakeholder relationships including those involving Crown funding.

Greg graduated Batchelor of Law from Victoria University of Wellington in 1990 and has a Batchelor of Arts from the same university majoring in History and Political Science. He has practiced law in Aotearoa New Zealand, England and Brazil.

Brae Watkins

  • Trust & Property Director

Brae Watkins (Ngāpuhi) is the Trust & Property Director for Te Tumu Paeroa. 

He oversees a range of activities including all property and trust activities for the almost 2000 trusts and agencies administered by Te Tumu Paeroa. 

He's worked in the property industry for the last 45 years in Listed, Private and Institutional Companies in New Zealand. He's a Fellow of the Property Institute of NZ, an Associate member of the Real Estate Institute of NZ, and a Member of the Institute of Directors of NZ. 

He's been a Director of Colonial Investments NZ and currently holds two Chairmanship roles for Te Tumu Kāinga (Housing Development) and MDTI (Dairy Farming Enterprise) within Te Tumu Paeroa representing the Māori Trustee interests.
