The Waimahia Inlet development in Auckland, is now well underway and Te Tumu Paeroa is playing a major role through one of its trusts, Te Tumu Kāinga.

The development sees collaborative efforts from across the community housing sector delivering a new neighbourhood that will provide a range of affordable and social housing options. Te Tumu Kāinga (formerly known as the Auckland and Onehunga Hostels Endowment trust), will own over 60 houses at Waimahia Inlet. Of these 50 will be made available on assisted home ownership programmes for Māori families looking to step on, or move up, the home ownership ladder.

Stanley Caffery, a father of three who moved into one of the homes provided by Te Tumu Kāinga last weekend is over the moon with the opportunity.

“My dream of becoming a home owner in Auckland in this modern day was always my earnest prayer. Through the affordable rental programme my hope has been restored and it has provided a way for me to fulfil my home ownership aspirations. My family is fully committed to this partnership, to make our dream a reality”, says Stanley.

Te Tumu Kāinga recognises the need for affordable housing to be available to whanau who need it. Te Tumu Kāinga's strategy focuses on establishing housing project partnerships that deliver quality, sustainable, social and affordable housing for Māori whānau across Aotearoa. Over the next few months they are planning the next stage of the implementation of this strategy and intend to reach out to potential partners for future developments.
