Sharing the knowledge and skills for succession and the next generation
This year we launched an Associate Advisors pilot programme, providing owners a pathway to enhance their governance skills by preserving and passing-on knowledge from one generation to another. The long-term goal of this programme is to encourage a new generation of owners and beneficial owners to be more actively involved in the mahi of the whenua and in the boardroom.
The programme started with a call out for applications. Over two years, over 20 future trustees will begin a planned programme that will allow them to participate in trustee, owner and working group meetings; business and trust planning; and formal courses and qualifications. Participants will set their own goals and will be able to access training and support to achieve them. The programme will conclude with associate advisors completing the governance training course, He Manu Taiko, we deliver in partnership with Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.
“This programme emerged from trustees wanting the opportunity for knowledge, skills and experience within their trust to be retained. By sharing the experiences with the next generation of leaders we’re creating a strong platform for the capability within the trust to continue to grow.” – Jessica Smith, Manager - Business Relationship Team.
We know that with stronger formal governance arrangements, and owners who are more capable of making governance decisions, together we’re better able to protect Māori land for generations to come.
