A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed today will see Te Tumu Paeroa and Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) work closely together to unlock the potential of Māori land.
LINZ is the government agency that maintains and builds confidence in property rights and location information.
Head of Te Tumu Paeroa and Māori Trustee Jamie Tuuta, notes that good location information and systems are fundamental to unlocking the potential of Māori land.
“As an organisation with a large portfolio of Maori land we rely on sound land information to make development decisions about its highest and best use for our owners. Māori land makes up five percent of New Zealand’s land base and is the principal pillar upon which the Māori economy rests. When you consider that some estimates are that as much as 80% of Maori land is unutilised or underperforming, unlocking its potential will significantly benefit all New Zealanders”.
“Today’s signing is a landmark occasion for both organisations – representing a mutual recognition of one another’s roles and functions, and how they align to create economic and cultural returns for all New Zealanders,” LINZ CE Peter Mersi said.
