Rangatahi entrepreneurs to make global connections on home soil

Te Tumu Paeroa, KPMG and ASB sponsor students to attend the World Indigenous Business Forum in Rotorua this month.

After an exceptional response to an online competition run by Te Tumu Paeroa to sponsor two tertiary students to attend the 9th annual World Indigenous Business Forum being held in Rotorua this month, KPMG and ASB have embraced the initiative, doubling the number of sponsored places being offered.

Four tertiary students from around New Zealand have been selected from the dozens who entered the competition. Each will have their registrations fees, travel and accommodation covered by Te Tumu Paeroa, ASB and KPMG.

Basil Tapuke, General Manager of Trusts at Te Tumu Paeroa, said, “The next generation are going to be leaders on an international stage. Our indigenous culture is an important foundation for our on-going relationships and business. Along with KPMG and ASB we want to increase the exposure of our young Māori entrepreneurs and innovators globally. Having this event happening on our home soil is a tremendous opportunity to start growing these networks.”

Kirikaiahi Mahutariki, Executive Manager of the Māori Financial Solutions team at ASB said, “The students selected for the opportunity are studying Indigenous Studies, Māori Agribusiness, and Business Studies, and they run their own businesses. We think they have as much to contribute to the event as they can learn from this opportunity.”

Jon Holmes, Partner at KPMG said, “We’re proud to work together to help share the experience, knowledge and vision of young kiwi entrepreneurs and innovators with the world. Ensuring our emerging talent are given opportunities to shine and connect with other like-minded people is part of our commitment to fuelling the prosperity of New Zealand”.

The 9th annual World Indigenous Business Forum (WIBF) takes place from 9 to 11 October 2018 in Rotorua, and it is also the first time the conference will be held in New Zealand. The New Zealand event is being held in conjunction with Te Ohu Whai Ao Charitable Trust.
